Locate the right case before requesting documents

    Identify the court

    Identify the court system and filing location before searching. Court ownership determines which docket and document procedures apply.

    Name the record product

    Break the task into record-specific questions. If the record will be revisited, save the source name and the identifier used to locate it.

    Search and open the case

    Open MCRO Case Search using the court’s official link. Search by case number when known, or by person name, citation number or attorney details, then open Case Details/Register of Actions to inspect the case and the documents available online. Document Search uses a case number to find available public case documents.

    A pending criminal case cannot be found by defendant name in MCRO; use case number, citation number, attorney name or attorney bar number instead. The court’s FAQ includes dismissed or continued-for-dismissal cases in this name-search limitation. A missing name result therefore does not establish that no case exists.

    Retrieve the available document

    MCRO document access and downloads are free. Public criminal documents filed on or after July 1, 2015 are within the described online coverage; earlier access is limited, with specified judgments, orders, opinions and court-generated notices from July 1, 2005 through June 30, 2015. Restricted records and documents outside remote-access rules are not made public by an online search. For an older or unavailable document, ask local court administration what access is available.

    Request the required copy format

    A downloaded MCRO watermark is not certification. Request a certified copy from court administration in the county where the document was originally filed, naming the case number and document. Confirm the format, current copy/certification fee and delivery there. Use Minnesota BCA’s separate criminal-history route if the task is a background check rather than obtaining a court case record.
